# 11/13/25 Blue Wings and Golden Light: Fall Fly Fishing the Eagle River Near Gypsum

- November 13, 2025

[Tymothe Meskel](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/blog/author/tymothe-meskel)

The Eagle River in October is like a Western movie set - golden hills, cold mornings, and browns acting like they own the place. The crowds are gone, the hatches are simple, and the trout are hungry but cautious. It’s the kind of fishing that rewards quiet casts and warm coffee.

## **![Eagle River Fly Fishing Report near Gypsum Colorado](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/2025%20Spring%20River%20Report%20Banners%20Cards/Eagle%20River%20Fly%20Fishing%20Report%20near%20Gypsum%20Colorado.png?width=3200&height=2400&name=Eagle%20River%20Fly%20Fishing%20Report%20near%20Gypsum%20Colorado.png)**

There’s a rhythm to the Eagle this time of year.
A frosty morning, a quiet rise around noon, and one fish too smart for its own good sipping under the bridge by the I-70 roar.
Fall fishing here isn’t loud - it’s deliberate.

## Hatch Chart (October–Early November)

- Blue-Winged Olives #18–22 | 11 AM–2 PM | Drift emergers in the film; hatch strong on cloudy days.
- Midges #22–26 | All day | Constant subsurface food; pair with a slim midge pupa or WD-40.
- Caddis #16–18 | Late afternoon | Sparse survivors in sunny pockets; brief surface window.

---

## Top Flies for Late October / Early November

### Dry Flies

- Parachute BWO #20 - Best rig: single on 6X - How: dead-drift over slow seams mid-day.
- Sparkle Dun BWO #20 - Best rig: dropper rig with 18" WD-40 - How: ride in the film for picky risers.
- CDC Caddis #18 - Best rig: solo in late afternoon light - How: quick skates along sunny banks.

### Nymphs

- Flashback Pheasant Tail #18 - Best rig: lead fly under micro-indicator - How: tick bottom on inside seams.
- WD-40 (Olive or Gray) #20–22 - Best rig: trailer 10–12" behind PT - How: drift mid-column through slower lanes.
- Juju Baetis #20 - Best rig: two-fly nymph setup with 6X - How: swing softly at the end of the drift when BWOs are active.

### Streamer

- Brown or Olive Bugger #10–12 - Best rig: single on 3X - How: slow retrieve across deep seams after 2 PM.

---

## Tips for Fishing the Eagle River

- Don’t rush mornings - best bite is mid-day.
- Target the seams near Gypsum bridges and wider pools.
- Long leaders (10–12 ft) with 6X fluoro are key in clear water.
- Mix in short, slow streamer swings as the light drops.
- Cover water efficiently - trout pod up this time of year.

---

## Access Points

**Gypsum Ponds SWA:** Easy access, ideal for BWO hatches late morning.
**Red Canyon Creek Confluence:** Deeper structure for nymphing.
**Eagle to Wolcott:** Broad riffles and pockets; perfect for fall walk-wades.
**Dotsero Section:** Lower gradient, consistent streamer water in the evening.

## Local Regulations & Notes

Check CPW River Reports for updates.

---

## FAQ

Q: When is the best window to fish?
A: 11 AM–3 PM; that’s when BWOs and midges both move.

Q: Can I fish streamers yet?
A: Yes - small and slow in the afternoon shadow lines.

Q: What’s the best rig overall?
A: Flashback PT → WD-40 under a small yarn indicator.

Q: Any crowds?
A: Moderate; locals only midweek, light traffic below Eagle.

Q: Are fish spawning?
A: Browns are active on redds; fish behind them or in deeper runs, never on gravel beds.
