The **Fryingpan River**, located in the White River National Forest, is one of Colorado’s most famous fly fishing destinations, known for its incredible tailwater fisheries and massive trout. Whether you’re chasing after **rainbow trout** feeding on Mysis shrimp or aiming for the elusive **brown trout**, this river provides a fly fishing experience that can be as challenging as it is rewarding.

### Best Sections to Fish on the Fryingpan River

1. **The Tailwater below Ruedi Reservoir**  
   This 14-mile stretch of **Gold Medal waters** offers the most consistent fishing. The cold waters released from Ruedi Dam create an environment perfect for trout, with temperatures remaining in the low 40s to 50s year-round. The area directly below the dam, famously known as the “Toilet Bowl,” is home to some of the largest rainbow trout in the river, thanks to a steady diet of Mysis shrimp​

- **Tip**: Mysis shrimp patterns are a must when fishing this section. The further downstream you go, mix in other patterns like midges and Baetis nymphs.

1. **The Upper Fryingpan**  
   Located above Ruedi Reservoir, the upper stretch of the Fryingpan offers quieter fishing and beautiful pocket water. The trout here are smaller but still plentiful, with opportunities to catch **brook trout** and wild brown trout. The upper section tends to fish best during the summer months with dry-dropper setups​

### Recommended Flies for the Fryingpan River

The Fryingpan’s cold waters support a variety of insect hatches throughout the year, making fly selection critical. Here are some top flies depending on the season:

- **Mysis Shrimp (#16-18)**: Essential for fishing near the dam, where trout feast on these shrimp.
- **Blue-Winged Olive (BWO)**: Ideal during spring and fall, especially in sizes #18-22.
- **Green Drake (#10-12)**: These large mayflies hatch in late summer, creating some of the best dry fly action of the year​

### Techniques for Success

1. **Nymphing**: Given the deep pools and tailwater conditions, nymphing is one of the most effective methods on the Fryingpan. Use a two-fly rig with a small Mysis shrimp and a tiny BWO or midge nymph during the cooler months.
2. **Dry Fly Fishing**: The Fryingpan is famous for its dry fly action, particularly during hatches of Green Drakes and PMDs. Look for rising fish in the flat, calm waters of "The Flats" section​
