# Fishing in Colorado: What’s the Reel Deal?

- December 26, 2024

So, you're ready to cast your line in Colorado's waters and reel in the big one? Before you jump in hook, line, and sinker, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of what’s allowed and what’s not in this angler’s paradise.

Fishing in Colorado\_ What’s the Reel Deal\_

## How Many Fish Can You Catch in a Day in Colorado?

![Untitled design (45)-1](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Untitled%20design%20(45)-1.png?width=1920&height=1080&name=Untitled%20design%20(45)-1.png)

Alright, you ambitious angler dreaming of filling your cooler to the brim? Well, hold your horses—or should we say, hold your trout. In Colorado, you’re typically limited to catching four trout a day. Now, before you start pouting, keep in mind that limits can change depending on where you're fishing. Some waters are a bit more generous, while others might keep you on a tighter leash.

- **Check the Rulebook**: [Colorado State Fishing Brochure ](https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/fishing.pdf)

## How Many Poles Can You Use in Colorado?

![Untitled design (35)](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Untitled%20design%20(35).png?width=1920&height=1080&name=Untitled%20design%20(35).png)

Ever dreamt of being a one-man fishing army, poles in each hand, casting like there’s no tomorrow? Well, Colorado’s got a little something to say about that. Here’s the deal: you're allowed one pole, but if you’re feeling extra ambitious, slap down a little extra cash for a second-rod stamp, and voila—you’re a two-pole wonder! Just remember, even with the stamp, two is the magic number. Don’t get greedy now.

- **More Info at**: [Colorado Fisherman](https://www.coloradofisherman.com/threads/using-multiple-poles.8083/#:~:text=You%20can%20carry%20as%20many,2%20lines%20in%20the%20water.&text=Without%20a%20second%20pole%20stamp%20you%20can%20only%20use%20one%20pole.)

## How Many Hooks Can You Use in Colorado?

Thinking of decking out your line like a Christmas tree with hooks galore? Slow down there, Captain Hook. In Colorado, you're capped at three common hooks per line. Whether you’re rocking a triple hook lure or spacing out three separate hooks, that’s your limit. Some folks think even that’s a bit too much, especially in catch-and-release areas, but hey, rules are rules!

- **More Info at**: [Colorado Fisherman](https://www.coloradofisherman.com/threads/why-i-think-cpw-should-only-allow-2-hooks-per-line-on-cnr-sections.160415/#:~:text=As%20per%20CO%20fishing%20regulations,only%20three%20common%20hooks%20attached.%22)

## Is It Illegal to Fish at Night in Colorado?

Love the idea of casting under the stars, with the moonlight shimmering on the water? You’re in luck—night fishing is totally legal in Colorado! But before you grab your lantern and midnight snacks, remember that some waters have specific hours to protect wildlife or manage fishing pressure. You better check before you plan that all-nighter.

- **More Info at**: [Colorado State Fishing Regulations](https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/fishing.pdf)

## Is Colorado All Catch and Release?

![Untitled design (1)](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Untitled%20design%20(1).png?width=1920&height=1080&name=Untitled%20design%20(1).png)

Not all of Colorado’s waters are catch-and-release, but let’s just say the state’s pretty fond of the concept. In many of the top spots—especially those Gold Medal Waters—you’ll need to let those beauties swim another day. But don’t worry; there are plenty of places where you can keep your catch within the legal limits. Just make sure you know the rules before you start filling your basket.

## Final Fishy Thoughts

Fishing in Colorado is as awesome as the Rockies, which are tall, but like any adventure, it’s all about knowing the ropes (or, in this case, the lines). Whether you’re casting by day or under the stars, make sure you’re playing by the rules. That way, you can keep fishing the beautiful waters of Colorado for years to come.

Tight lines and happy fishing!
