The **Yampa River**, a tailwater gem especially in sections near **Stagecoach Reservoir** and **Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area**, is fishing exceptionally well. **Midges** and **Blue-Winged Olives** are hatching steadily, giving you plenty of opportunities for surface action. Whether you're nymphing or stripping streamers for aggressive **browns**, this river is primed for a productive day on the water, with autumn colors only adding to the experience.

The Yampa is wearing its late-October colors like a trophy rack. With golden cottonwoods on the banks and a few stubborn caddis still fluttering around, it’s one of the best fall freestones left before winter sets in. Flows are steady, the water’s cold but clear, and the browns are slipping into their recovery mode after spawn. It’s quiet on the river — just you, the steam, and maybe a moose or two.

- Dead-drift small mayfly nymphs and emergers through slower runs.
- Avoid shallow redds — fish deeper holding water downstream of gravel bars.
- Watch for midges late in the day; dry fly action is short but sweet.
- Streamers produce well right before sunset when the light drops behind the valley.

- **Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area** – Easy access, classic riffle-run-tailout structure, and excellent post-spawn brown holding zones.
- **Downtown Steamboat Section** – Productive for quick sessions, especially near the 5th Street Bridge.
- **Stagecoach Tailwater** – Consistent flows and temps below the dam, reliable BWO and midge hatches.

**Parking:** Good pullouts at Chuck Lewis and bridge areas.  
**Wading:** Excellent — clear flow and easy entry.  
**Trail Access:** Moderate, watch for icy banks.
