Waterton Canyon is the South Platte’s most convenient reality check. It is close, it is clear, and it does not care how confident you felt in the parking lot. When winter settles in, Waterton rewards anglers who keep it small, keep it clean, and keep moving.

The fish have moved. Waterton is entering one of its most enjoyable periods of the year.

The canyon remains one of the most accessible stretches of the South Platte system, but June finally brings more forgiving fish behavior. Trout are feeding longer, moving farther to intercept food, and beginning to reward anglers who focus on current seams rather than simply depth.

Caddis activity is increasing throughout the canyon while PMDs are beginning to show. Midges remain important, especially during slower periods, but the river is steadily transitioning toward a more summer-like menu.
