# Discover Colorado's Hidden Fly Fishing Gems: Gore Creek & Arkansas River

- October 30, 2024

While Colorado is famed for its big-name fly fishing rivers like the Fryingpan and the Colorado River, there are several lesser-known gems that offer exceptional angling opportunities. Two such hidden treasures are **Gore Creek** and the **Arkansas River**, both of which boast abundant trout populations, stunning scenery, and a more tranquil fly fishing experience away from the crowds.

![fly fishing in colorado (3)](https://risebeyondflyfishing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/fly%20fishing%20in%20colorado%20(3).png?width=600&height=400&name=fly%20fishing%20in%20colorado%20(3).png)

### Gore Creek: A Small Stream with Big Potential

**Gore Creek**, located near Vail, Colorado, may be small in size, but it offers big rewards for fly anglers. This pristine mountain stream is home to healthy populations of **rainbow, brown, and brook trout**. The upper section of Gore Creek is ideal for those looking for more secluded spots, while the lower stretches offer easier access closer to town. One of the key features of Gore Creek is its **Gold Medal Waters**, a designation indicating some of the highest quality trout fishing in Colorado.

#### Tips for Fishing Gore Creek:

- **Best Flies**: Gore Creek sees consistent hatches of **caddis, blue-winged olives, and midges**, making dry flies and nymphs essential. During the summer months, terrestrials like ants and hoppers also perform well.
- **Recommended Gear**: A 3- or 4-weight fly rod is perfect for handling Gore Creek's smaller, often technical waters.
- **Where to Fish**: Focus on sections near **Vail's Ford Park** and **West Vail**, where deeper pools and riffles provide excellent habitat for trout.

### Arkansas River: A Fly Fishing Haven in Colorado’s Heart

The **Arkansas River** is a fly fishing treasure that stretches more than 100 miles through central Colorado. Known for its **brown trout** population, the Arkansas is one of the longest **Gold Medal** rivers in the state. The river offers a range of fishing environments, from fast-moving pocket water in **Bighorn Sheep Canyon** to meandering, slow-moving sections near **Salida**. Anglers love the diversity of fishing opportunities, with the river supporting a range of aquatic insect hatches.

#### Tips for Fishing the Arkansas River:

- **Best Flies**: The Arkansas River is famous for its **caddis hatch**, one of the most prolific in Colorado. Other productive flies include **stonefly nymphs**, **pale morning duns (PMDs)**, and **blue-winged olives (BWOs)**.
- **Ideal Techniques**: Nymphing is highly effective on the Arkansas, but dry-dropper rigs can be used in the summer when trout are rising.
- **Best Sections**: Some of the top sections include **Browns Canyon National Monument**, **Salida East**, and **Wellsville**, which offer beautiful scenery and consistent trout action.

### Pro Tip: Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures Await

Gore Creek and the Arkansas River represent two of Colorado's hidden fly fishing gems, each offering unique opportunities for anglers seeking solitude, beauty, and exceptional trout fishing. Whether you're drawn to the intimate waters of Gore Creek or the expansive flows of the Arkansas, these rivers are worth exploring.
