If you’re new to fly fishing—or new to Denver—you’re in the right place. Colorado’s Front Range has some of the best beginner-friendly fly fishing in the country, and you don’t need to drive hours to find it.
Whether you’ve never cast a fly rod or just need an easy place to practice without hardcore crowds, here are 7 spots near Denver where you can catch trout, learn the ropes, and maybe even skip the fly shop lecture.

Why These Spots?
- Less technical water than Deckers or Cheesman
- Short drive from Denver metro (under 1 hour)
- Easy parking & public access
- Good populations of stocked or willing trout
1. Bear Creek (Evergreen, CO)
A small stream that’s perfect for learning to read water and make short casts.
- Drive time: ~35 minutes
- Best flies: Parachute Adams (16–18), RS2 Emergers (20–22)
- Tip: Fish below Evergreen Lake early or hit the picnic area stretch midday.

2. Clear Creek (Golden, CO)
A convenient option right off I-70, with plenty of public pullouts.
- Drive time: ~25 minutes
- Best flies: Elk Hair Caddis (14–16), Prince Nymph (16–18)
- Tip: Higher up canyon = fewer tubers, better fishing.
3. Boulder Creek (Boulder, CO)
A great “urban trout” experience flowing through town and up into the foothills.
- Drive time: ~40 minutes
- Best flies: Royal Wulff (14–16), Copper John (18)
- Tip: Park near Eben G. Fine Park and walk upstream for quick access.
4. South Platte at Waterton Canyon
The easiest entry into South Platte fly fishing, without the technical pressure of Deckers.
- Drive time: ~35 minutes
- Best flies: RS2 (20–22), San Juan Worm, Pat’s Rubber Legs
- Tip: Bike in a few miles for better water, or fish near the dam early.
5. St. Vrain Creek (Lyons, CO)
Small water, easy access, and surprisingly good dry fly fishing in late spring.
- Drive time: ~50 minutes
- Best flies: Griffith’s Gnat (20–22), BWO Sparkle Dun (18–20)
- Tip: Fish west of town near Button Rock Preserve for less pressure.
6. Cherry Creek Reservoir Spillway
Not a classic trout stream, but a fun spot for warmwater species like bass and carp.
- Drive time: ~20 minutes
- Best flies: Woolly Bugger (black, olive), Clouser Minnow
- Tip: Try early mornings or evenings when traffic is lighter.
7. Sloan’s Lake (Urban Carp Bonus)
For those willing to experiment, urban carp fishing can teach stealth, patience, and presentation better than any stocked pond.
- Drive time: ~15 minutes
- Best flies: San Juan Worm, small crawfish patterns
- Tip: Watch for cruising fish on warm days near shore.
